International Glow Discharge Spectroscopy Symposium

Presentation

International Glow Discharge Spectroscopy SymposiumInternational Glow Discharge Spectroscopy Symposium

The International Glow Discharge Spectroscopy Symposium 2010 will be held at CUFR Jean Francois Champollion in Albi, from 22 to 27 August 2010. This conference will bring together members of the European Analytical Glow Discharge Network (GLADNET, previous meetings were held in Antwerp, Dresden, Belgrade, Thun, Budapest and Oviedo) and members of the European Working Group on Glow Discharge Spectroscopy (EW-GDS). Over 90% of members are of foreign nationality and spread over 12 countries. During this week, invited lectures, oral communications and poster presentations are scheduled, where international experts, industrialists and students can share in the field of elemental analysis of materials by glow discharge.

Supported by the Marie Curie European Union (MRTN-CT-2006-035459, Marie Curie Actions for Human Resources and Mobility Activity of the 6th framework), the project's main objective is to train GLADNET researchers (more than 60% of the students are women) on these analytical techniques in the context of European mobility. The objectives are:

  • Implement research projects in collaboration with university laboratories and industry to form a new generation of scientists and raise the scientific and technological locks.
  • Provide interdisciplinary training provided by leading experts from academia and industry.
  • Create a common basis for technology transfer from academic to industrial research.
  • To provide the European industry of skilled researchers and new knowledge in the field of solid analysis, essential to the achievement and maintenance of high quality manufacturing processes for existing and developing new materials and surface coatings. The industrial sectors concerned by this technique (GD) are of crucial importance for Europe. They include life sciences (biocompatibility of medical implants), nano-technology (composition of very thin films, nanotubes) and thin (solar cells), but also more traditional sectors such as aerospace, automotive, steel and aluminum production.

Topics

International Glow Discharge Spectroscopy SymposiumInternational Glow Discharge Spectroscopy Symposium

In glow discharge spectrometry, the sample acts as a cathode during a rare gas discharge (argon). The elements are sputtered by the plasma, excited and ionized and then detected by optical emission spectroscopy (OES) or mass spectrometry (MS). This technique can determine the elemental composition as a function of depth for samples solid conductors or non-conductive depending on the excitation power (continuous, DC or radiofrequency, RF). The source most commonly used is the Grimm one or derivate from:

Glow discharge spectrometry allows the elemental analysis of bulk materials and the analysis of surfaces and interfaces (concentration profiles). The technique is simple to use and very fast once the calibration performed using standard samples. The use of a radio frequency source can be applied to conductive materials or not. It allows characterization of layers and interfaces from the extreme surface to a thickness of 150 microns with a depth resolution up to nm. Depending on the circumstances, the sensitivity concentration can go from ppm to 100%. Below is an example of elemental analysis and in-depth profile of the multilayer sample after plasma sputtering and analysis.

The range of applications and the capability of this plasma analysis method are increasing.
In this context, the following topics will be discussed during this conference:

  • DC, RF Discharges.
  • Electrical Diagnostics.
  • Optical detection / mass detection.
  • Crater, sputtering rate and quantification.
  • Effects of gases and molecular excitation process.
  • Modeling.
  • Elemental analysis (homogeneous surface, multilayer).
  • Fragile materials (thermal glass, solar cells, polymers ...)
  • New plasma sources.
  • Optimization and improvements.
  • Industrial applications.

Access to Albi

There are direct connections by air between the major European cities and Toulouse (Toulouse-Blagnac Airport). From Toulouse-Blagnac airport to the city center, there is a shuttle bus operating every 20 minutes. The shuttle service stops just in front of Matabiau railway station. Then a train can be taken to reach Albi railway station (Albi-Ville station). The travel duration is one hour.

Special transport agreement for symposium attendees

On Sunday, August 22, a special shuttle bus will be proposed between Toulouse-Blagnac airport and Albi with a periodicity of around two hours. It will be organized according to the participant arrival hours. Don’t forget to send to the local committee your hour of arrival hour in Toulouse-Blagnac airport to facilitate this organization. The shuttle bus will go to the symposium hotels in Albi.

Congress venue

The symposium will be held in the J. F. Champollion University of Albi, located “Place de Verdun” (concentric circles on the map, near the Albi-Ville railway station). The oral and poster session will take place in the Multimedia Center (-1- Maison Multimédia) situated at the main entrance of the University.
